Family Law Overview
Report
Since 1990, attorney Stephen P. Eaton has provided clients in Albuquerque and throughout New Mexico with representation that combines personal attention and cost-effective service with knowledgeable practice and a willingness to do what is necessary to meet our clients' short- and long-term goals. Our firm understands what our clients are facing.
Alimony
Report
When a marriage is dissolved, it does not mean that the responsibility of support between the spouses is terminated. Typically, the state of New Mexico will recognize this mutual responsibility for support and may grant alimony or spousal support payments to one of the spouses. Alimony and spousal support are designed to help both spouses, at least temporarily, to maintain as closely as possible the lifestyles that they had prior to the divorce.
Child Custody
Report
New Mexico's family courts prefer when parents share responsibility for their children and when both parents contribute to the important decisions regarding education, welfare and lifestyle. Unfortunately, parents cannot always agree on the best interests of their children and important custody decisions are left up to a judge to make.
Child Support
Report
All parents have a responsibility to contribute to the support of their children, whether those parents are married, separated or divorced. The issue of child support, however, can be one of the most contentious issues related to divorce, as the quality of life of one or both parents and the children will be greatly impacted by a support order.
