The first golf course in the United States was Oakhurst Links, built in 1884 in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. It was originally a six hole track which was later expanded to nine holes. Oakhurst was the first course and golf club in the United States. Soon their "clubhouse" became an old apple tree, and the original members of the St Andrews golf club became known as "The Apple Tree Gang."
