I was probably about 10 years old when my father first showed me how to choose the right blank, clean the jaws, set the keys properly and slowly grind the blank to match the original key. My calling. I soon discovered the keys we cut rarely came back because they didn't work. We didn't do locksmithing work there, only cut keys, so it was kind of a backward way to learn and understand why some keys worked and others didn't.
We often would get keys from other stores that didn't work and I'd discover that they were cut too deep, or too high, or spacing was wrong. And then I would make them better. Had quite a following by the age of 15. Then the snag. I wanted to step it up and went to the public library and found 2 books on locksmithing.
