Mati began working as a carpenter at the age of 16. He worked as an apprentice for two years before serving a three-year military service. After his military service, he went back to work as a carpenter at the age of 21 but now was no longer an apprentice. He moved to the United States of America in 1980 at the age of 23 and began working as a carpenter for a builder in Springfield, Virginia.
