The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that your child get an orthodontic check-up no later than age 7. By this age, we can spot subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth while some baby teeth are still present. When we begin treatment early, we can guide the growth of the jaw and guide incoming permanent teeth, making it easier to fit braces later.
Fixed Appliances

An orthodontic appliance uses a controlled force which is applied to the teeth to change their position. The appliance used is chosen based on the patient's needs as well as achieving the best results for the patient. Sometimes tenderness may develop when a new appliance is used, but it is only temporary.
Removable Appliances

Many times removable appliances are used in conjunction with fixed appliances (braces). Treatment with removable appliances is based on the patient's needs and certain types of malocclusion. When performed early, orthodontic treatment can effectively prevent and intercept malocclusion at an early age.

There are a number of different reasons you may need adult orthodontic treatment. Adult orthodontics is useful in obtaining proper alignment of the abutments for the construction of bridges and partial dentures and to move teeth into alignment. Retainers are also important and may be used for long periods.

Some of the most common causes of TMD are chronic muscle tension associated with clenching or gnashing of teeth, and habits such as gum chewing or stressed jaw posture at work or during sleep. Neck and shoulder muscle tension and headaches or tooth pain may also be a contributor by the referring pain and tightness to the jaws and face.
