The origin story of Colorado Lawyer Team (COLawTeam) started in 2015, when Justie Nicol started her solo law firm, Nicol Law Offices. Since then, multiple team members, an entirely new practice area, and two partners have been added. What was once Nicol Law Offices is now COLawTeam, a full-fledged criminal defense and family law practice built to be the law firm of the future.
The current iteration of COLawTeam rolled out in 2019 when long-time colleagues and friends, Justie Nicol and Jennifer Gersch looked around at the legal community and realized partnering up was the way to go. Currently, we have an all-woman team by happy accident. But our partners know what it means to strive for work-life balance and flexibility in practice.

Justie Nicol is a feisty, red-headed, nerdy, dog & toddler mom, with a variety of legal experience who's actually a PERSON (human first, then attorney) and who wants to GENUINELY HELP her clients. Justie practices primarily criminal defense work but is also well-known for innovation, systems-design, and using legal tech to achieve great results for the firm and her clients.

I am passionate about my career and family and have never been the kind of person to take no for an answer. Ever since I was a little kid, my dad always used to say "she's going to make a great lawyer" because I liked to argue constantly and MAYBE meant yes and NO meant I will try to negotiate in about 10 minutes and that should be a yes.

For the past 5 years, Debby Spaulding has worked part-time as a legal assistant for Jennifer Gersch (Schneider). When Jennifer decided to partner with Justie Nicol, she asked Debby to come along and be part of the dream team at Colorado Lawyer Team. Besides working part-time as a legal assistant, Debby is also a nurse who specializes in pain management.

Criminal Defense is a very broad term and can cover everything from petty offenses in municipal court all the way to serious felony matters in District Court. The good news is we handle all of it. We work to ensure clients have effective and efficient criminal defense no matter what level of offense they are charged with.
Animal Law and Replevin Cases

Animals are part of our families. We sleep in the same beds as our dogs. We share our food with the cat. Hell, we even have an #OfficeHorse (it's a real hashtag on Twitter, if you care to follow along). So, it's only natural that we have dedicated a portion of our practice to animals. Unfortunately, animals are often considered property in Colorado.
