Bernard J. Dougherty, Established Kobayashi Dojo in Cape Coral 1986 and is the master instructor (Shihan). Shihan Dougherty is a 45-year practitioner in the art of Hayashi-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do.
He currently holds the rank of Nana-dan (7th degree black belt) in International Hayashi-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do Federation (IHSKF) and holds the rank of San-Dan (3rd degree black belt) in International Kenshin-Ryu Kobudo Association (IKKA) Okinawa Kobudo (weapons).A 60-year resident of Lee County, Shihan Dougherty is very involved in the community in which he lives and is committed to providing quality teaching to students of all ages.

Receiving my black belt has been one of my life's most important achievements. Karate has taught me the power of hard work, patience, and discipline. It also helped me to gain confidence and to move outside of my comfort zone. Additionally, Kobayashi Dojo has such a strong community. My siblings and I have been so lucky to have practiced karate together, and the dojo community has always felt like family.

Shito Ryu Karate is one of three major styles of Japanese Karate Do. This style teaches Speed, Power, Balance, Focus with Efficient Technique. It teaches Self-Defense along with the culture of this Martial Art. We teach our students this style in order to be strong inside but not aggressive. Our style of Karate-Do helps built superior Character and Confidence that lasts a lifetime.
